How to Find St Michael’s

Welcome to Chagford

St Michael's welcome

St Michael’s stands, as it has done for over 760 years, in the heart of Chagford.

Our Grade 1 listed church is open daily from 8.30am to 8pm or dusk, whichever is the earlier, for everyone to visit. The church is well used by many groups, and you are welcome to come at any time. We ask that you respect the privacy of whatever is in progress, but do not be surprised if they invite you to join in.

There are two public car parks close by, both with EV charging points. One is across the road from the church and the other has access to the northeast end of the surrounding extensive churchyard.

St Michael’s is at one end of the Archangel Way pilgrimage path, which stretches across Dartmoor to St Michael de Rupe on Brentor, and on the route of the Two Moors Way, so we are pleased to host a vast variety of pilgrims throughout the year. Generally, we are unable to offer any sustenance, but there is a toilet available for your use and the town is well provided with a variety of places to eat.

The village of Chagford is located near to the northeast edge of the Dartmoor National Park, nestling between Nattadon and Meldon hills with the river Teign to the northeast. It was one of the first places in Devon to have gas street lighting and owned its own pioneering hydroelectric generation system from 1891 until it was connected to the national grid. It is a unique and special place to live, work and worship, and attracts a wide array of artists, writers, makers, and doers who have ben drawn to this richer natural and spiritual way of life. It has many independent shops and services, including a library, dentist doctors’ surgery, pharmacy, grocery stores, Post Office, two community halls, four pubs with restaurants, several cafes, an art gallery and much more.
